Lando Norris has defended his wave at McLaren teammate Daniel Ricciardo at the Monaco Grand Prix and slammed the “absolute crap” speculation over the gesture’s meaning.
With 25 laps still remaining at the Grand Prix Ricciardo was shown a blue flag and as Norris passed, he waved at the Aussie, leading fans to believe he was mocking Ricciardo.
“Getting lapped, might be the first time. I don’t really know what to say,” Ricciardo said after finishing 12th, while Lando was third.
“I have a tear in my eye here for Daniel Ricciardo,” Sky Sports commentator Martin Brundle said of the wave.
“That’s an ouch moment isn’t it. It hurts for Daniel Ricciardo.”
Norris hit out at any suggestion he was mocking Ricciardo and instead explained he was just trying to show his “thanks”.
“All right, so I see so many of you make up absolute crap and nonsense as usual,” he said on Twitch.
“By the way, any time someone lets me pass for a blue flag, anyone, if they get out of the way properly and they should, I put my hand up and say thanks, all right?”
Norris pointed out that he also waves at others he passed in similar circumstances including Nikita Mazepin and Mick Schumacher.
“I did it to freaking everyone; Mazepin, Schumacher, Danny,” Norris said.
“Whoever I passed and they got out of the way, I put my hand up and say thanks.
“So, don’t just notice one when I passed Danny and think I’m doing something that is not right.
“Let me just get that point across because I see a lot of stories that people make up.”
Norris currently sits third in the Formula One driver’s standings behind Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton.
