AFL great’s massive call on Oliver-Petracca duo

Port Adelaide great Kane Cornes says Melbourne duo Christian Petracca and Clayton Oliver could go down as one of the greatest midfield duos of all-time on current form.

Having both committed to Melbourne on new long-term deals, Petracca and Oliver have been in sensational form for the Demons and key cog’s in the club’s 9-1 start to the year.

Despite his side’s one-point loss to Adelaide in Round 10, Oliver enjoyed his best game of the year, tallying 38 possessions (27 contested) and kicking three goals.

Oliver is averaging a career-high 32.1 disposals per game through ten games, while Petracca has also averaged a career-high 29 disposals per game.

Cornes noted that Oliver’s career-high mark in kicks per game (14.8) made him a more damaging player and said his shift could vault the Melbourne duo among some all-time midfield combinations.

“What I think he is doing, taking a page out of Lachie Neale’s book last year, Neale made a conscious decision to kick the ball more than he handballed it, and he’s now a kick-first player,” Cornes told Nine’s Footy Classified.

“There’s no doubt he’s made made a shift to kicking more and going forward to use his height and strength. He and Petracca could be one of the great duos in the midfield.

“We can compare them to (Simon) Black and (Michael) Voss or (Daniel) Kerr and (Chris) Judd. I think they are in the conversation to be that good if they keep going like this.”
