Fatty’s one grim ‘positive’ for ‘terrible’ Maroons

Queensland legend Paul Vautin has slammed the Maroons’ performance in their 50-6 loss to New South Wales as one of the worst ever seen in State of Origin.

In front of a capacity crowd in Townsville, the home side served up an inept performance as the Blues ran riot, the 44-point margin their biggest ever Origin win.

It is just the second time New South Wales had scored 50 points in an Origin match, after their 56-16 win in Game Three of the 2000 series.

“Well that was no fun at all,” Vautin said on Nine’s coverage. “It was terrible.”

Asked if he could find a single positive in the horror defeat, Vautin was blunt.

“Only when the full-time hooter went,” he said, shaking his head.

“That’s one of the worst I’ve ever seen.”

And in an ominous sign for Queensland, Vautin was at a loss to suggest how they can turn it around for Game Two of the series.

“I don’t know where they go from here. Lets give credit to New South Wales for a start, they were outstanding right from the get-go,” he said.

“Nathan Cleary took control of the game. There was a period during the second half when Junior Paulo and Payne Haas took the field, the commandeered the middle of the ruck, and they carved them up.

“On the back of that, they were able to score more tries through Tommy (Trbojevic) and Latrell (Mitchell).

The New South Wales centres were unstoppable, with Trbojevic scoring three tries and Mitchell two.

“They were outstanding, those two,” Vautin said. “Everyone thought they would be, that was going to be the danger for Queensland, and we couldn’t control them.

“NSW were fantastic, Latrell was great, Tommy was great, full kudos goes to them, but Queensland were dreadful.”

Vautin said the reasons for the record loss were clear.

“We were out-tackled, they tackled harder than we did, they ran harder than we did, they did everything better.

“Simple as that, that’s why we got beaten.”
