Fognini crashes out after moment of ‘stupidity’

Fiery Italian star Fabio Fognini has crashed out of the Roland-Garros men’s singles draw, but not before providing one last moment of on-court madness.

The No.27 seed was pitted against Argentina’s Federico Delbonis and fell to a 4-6 1-6 3-6 straight sets loss to his unseeded opponent, a disappointing result after a fourth-round finish in February’s Australian Open.

The 34-year-old is no stranger to an on-court blow-up and is known for punching his racquet out of frustration during key moments in matches.

However, this time Fognini came off second best after bashing his racquet with his right fist during his loss to Delbonis.

After punching his racquet several times with a closed fist, Fognini was forced to call for a doctor, with cameras showing his right hand heavily bruised from the battering.

“The stupidity of that is that he’s had to call the doctor out onto the court to fix the knuckles and get them taped,” Australian tennis great Todd Woodbridge said on Nine’s coverage.

“It’s not the first time we’ve seen that from a player this week is it?” Sam Groth added on commentary. “There’s something in the strings.”

Following his third-round win, Delbonis will face either 15th seed Casper Ruud or Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the fourth round.
