Holmes injury blow derails Cowboys finals hopes

North Queensland’s chances of a finals berth have copped a blow with Maroons star Valentine Holmes ruled out for a month with injury.

Holmes suffered a shoulder problem in the final seconds of the first half of Queensland’s 20-18 Origin III win. He did not return to the field of play for the second half

The Cowboys confirmed Holmes suffered a grade three AC joint injury and will miss four weeks.

“Valentine Holmes will be sidelined for a month after suffering a shoulder injury in Wednesday night’s State of Origin finale,” a club statement said.

“Holmes underwent scans upon his return to North Queensland yesterday afternoon, which revealed a grade three AC joint injury.

“He will not require surgery and will begin rehab in the coming days.”

The 12th-placed Cowboys are on a four-game losing streak and are in danger of missing the finals. They face the Roosters on Saturday.
