YouTuber Logan Paul proved his detractors wrong and went the distance against the greatest pound-for-pound boxer that has ever lived.
But not everyone is buying it.
As the dust settles on another Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather boxing circus that yet again left a bitter taste in the mouths of many around the fight world, some eagle-eyed fans are refusing to accept the story they’ve been dished up.
As is the case with most Mayweather fights – the contest went the distance. Mayweather has never been a big puncher and has relied on outboxing opponents for years. But still, most thought the experience level would mean the undefeated legend would catch Paul at some point.
Mayweather walked Paul down in the latter rounds and landed 43 total punches to Paul’s 28 – with 36 of those being power shots. Paul landed 21 power shots. But the telling blow never came.
Mayweather-Paul bout labelled a farce
But a brief clip that has gone viral on social media among disgruntled fans has many starting to question whether the pair had agreed before touching gloves that the fight would go the distance.
In the dying seconds of the sixth round, Mayweather slipped a clumsy overhand right from Paul and fired back with a tight right hook. The split-second strike appeared to send Paul limp as he fell forward on Mayweather who quickly clinched the YouTuber, appearing to prop him up.
Mayweather could be seen holding on to Paul’s lumbering frame for a matter of seconds until the bell sounded for the end of the round, before cameras appeared to quickly cut to vision of the crowd as the referee stepped in.
While some are refusing to believe the strike could have been a fight-ending knockout, many are at least contesting whether Mayweather impeded a face-first knockdown.
TV presenter Sid Seixeiro responded to the clip by tweeting: “The moment you realise Floyd Mayweather probably laid a slew of bets that this fight would go the distance.”
For The Win’s Henry McKenna wrote: “During the fight, there were a few moments where you couldn’t help but wonder if Mayweather was holding his punches — and even physically holding up Paul from a knockout finish.”
Musician Benton Blount added: “Seems fans of both Floyd Mayweather & Logan Paul who feel that either won the fight failed to see the moment when Floyd literally knocked out Paul then held him up to help him finish the fight. Why are you arguing about a fight that was predetermined?”
Wrestler Allysin Kay wrote: “Everything is pro wrestling.”
While the fight was sold on the massive size difference between both men – Paul’s towering frame was difficult to get around and both men fought in the clinch regularly. The YouTuber also wrestled during sections of the fight.
Walking back to their dressing rooms, Floyd Mayweather and Logan Paul were seen grinning from ear to ear. Celebrating with their teams.
Reports vary but both men are set to walk away with a lot money. Mayweather a reported $132 million. Paul somewhere in the vicinity of $20 million. And that has plenty of people peeved – especially those in the combat sports world from boxing and MMA.
