Canberra coach Ricky Stuart has backed George Williams’ replacement to fire for them in their Saturday night clash against the Roosters.
The British half had an ugly, public fallout with the Raiders, but Stuart said pre-game that he has a “great relationship” with Williams and was focused on the future of the club.
“I’ve got to make a decision for the future of our club, not today, and the club has made the right decision, full stop,” Stuart told Fox Sports before his team walked out at Central Coast Stadium.
“My job as a coach was to take control of the situation and I’m hoping players can do that tonight. We’re a good football team and we need to stop the rot. We need to win.”
In a boost for the Raiders, Jack Wighton is back and will pair up in the halves with a different Williams – Sam Williams.
“I was talking to [Wighton] today about it and Sammy fits in very well with any style of 6,” Stuart said.
“He’s an organiser, he’s a good communicator. You certainly now what he wants when you’re a forward or the 9, he has great dominance in his verbal.
“He’ll be a great link to Jack when that’s needed or required.
“Jack brings an air of confidence to the boys as well. We all need to do our job well, that’s me included and we’ve just got to take control of this situation.”
