Rising Aussie star given secret F1 test

Rising Australian motorsport star Oscar Piastri is expected to be back in a Formula One car tonight, with the 20-year-old likely to test for the Alpine team at Britain’s Silverstone circuit.

Piastri, who is currently second in the F2 title race after a strong weekend in Monaco, will drive one of the team’s older cars, with F1 rules requiring teams to use cars that are at least two years old for testing.

It’s a reward for the Melbourne-born driver’s strong start to the F2 season, which included a win in Bahrain and two second place finishes in Monaco.

“Monaco Race 2 wasn’t wet enough apparently,” Piastri tweeted this morning.

“So Silverstone has decided to go all out with the rain. Shall be fun tomorrow.”

Neither Alpine or Piastri will publicly confirm the test.

The one-day outing will be Piastri’s second time in a Formula One car, having tested for Renault (now Alpine) in October in Bahrain.

“I was a little bit nervous beforehand, which is pretty normal, but after the first lap I got over that and focused on driving fast and having fun,” he said after the Bahrain test.

“I think I adapted quite well and got up to speed reasonably quickly.

“I really enjoyed the day, so a massive thank you to Renault for this opportunity. I’m feeling very lucky to drive an F1 car, not everyone gets to do it, so a massive thanks to them.”

Piastri is a member of the Alpine Academy, along with fellow F2 drivers Guanyu Zhou and Christian Lundgaard.

Piastri is the reigning F3 champion, having also won the Formula Renault EuroCup title in 2019, and last week told Wide World of Sports that his aim is to be on the F1 grid as soon as next year.

“If I do have a very good year this year, if I won the title this year, that would be three championships in a row, and I’d like to think I’d be in a very strong position to get an F1 seat next year,” he said.

“I don’t know what more I could do than win three titles in three years, and if I won in F2 there’s not really anywhere to go other than F1.”
