Star Saints duo slammed after ‘blown season’

Kangaroos great David King has taken aim at star St Kilda duo Brad Hill and Brad Crouch for key mistakes in the loss against Port Adelaide which he believes is a death-knell to the club’s finals hopes this year.

The Saints had a golden opportunity to put themselves in the top eight, but failed to capitalise on some guilt-edged opportunities as the Power ran out 13-point winners, leaving Brett Ratten’s side 11th on the ladder on percentage.

Despite the Saints being equal on points with the eighth-placed Bombers, King “put a line through St Kilda”, calling it a “blown season” and a “disappointing campaign”.

Hill and Crouch were prolific against the Power, collecting 29 and 36 disposals respectively, but King suggested their performances weren’t as good as the numbers suggested.

The two-time premiership winner took aim at the duo for their ball use late in the contest, becoming the latest in a long line of Hill critics since the ex-Hawk joined the Saints on a monster deal.

“If you’re in the team to kick – and I’ve said this before this year – you’re not asking Brad Hill to go and win a contest, you’re not asking Brad Hill to go and win a clearance, you’re not asking him to tackle anyone, but you’re asking Brad to whenever he gets the ball, to deliver your part of the bargain, your skills – your kicking must be elite,” he told SEN’s Whateley.

“We’re conceding other parts of the game everywhere for you. We’re instructing every player on our list to give you the ball when you’ve got a metre on your man … and then he does that?

“People say you’re too hard on him. This is the reality of performance at this level. If you fail, you miss the finals.

“They miss the finals on the back of what they’ve recruited. The niceties go out of footy pretty quick – it’s a blown season – they don’t recover from the weekend.”
