Townsend’s heroics seal golden point thriller

Sharks playmaker Chad Townsend kicked the match-winning field in golden point to give Cronulla a 13-12 win over St George Illawarra.

It took Townsend three attempts before he knocked over the match-winner.

Townsend’s first two attempts were charged down, however the halfback on his third attempt didn’t have a single Dragons defender get to him in time as he slotted his third shot from 15 metres directly in front.

“They’re the moments you train for, you live for that,” Townsend told Nine after the match.

“I had a few earlier on that got charged down, but you’ve just got to stay on it. Mistakes happen and things happen in a game.

“We were a bit down on confidence over the last few weeks so we just needed to hang in there.

“We’ve believed in what we’ve been doing and tonight we just needed to get the win and we did that.”

Tonight’s match once again showcased the NRL’s hard stance on high and dangerous tackles.

Seven players were placed on report and three were sin-binned, with Paul Vaughan, Mawene Hiroti and Josh Dugan the trio who were hit with 10-minute marching orders.

The trio were also placed on report while Briton Nikora, Teig Wilton, Josh Kerr and Blayke Brailey were all placed on report for separate incidents.
